Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
