The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
